One of the world's finest red wine grapes. Excellent from Bordeaux, California, Chile and Australia. Makes BIG complex wines

CHARDONNAY (Also French White Burgundy)
Home is Burgundy region, doeas well in California, Chile, Australia, etc. Dry, full bodied, aromatic, fruity.

MERLOT (Also Bordeaux)
Home is Bordeaux, thrives in California, Chile and elsewhere. Generally softer than Cabernets and more versatile.

NEBBIOLO (Mostly from Italy's Piedmont Region)
This grape makes big, sturdy, dry red wines that need some age, e.g. Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara.

PINOT GRIGIO (Also Pinot Gris)
Enormously popular wine from Italy. Dry, fruity, quite versatile.
PINOT NOIR (Also red French Burgundy)
Arguably the most versatile wine grape of all! A rather light red, but has fascinating, earthy, wild flavor nuances and scents.                               
RIESLING (Also Many German & Alsace Wines)
Germany's great white wine grape; outstanding in alsace, also does well elsewhere. Dry or sweet; unique, distintive character.

SANGIOVESE (Also Tuscan Reds)
Principle red grape for Tuscany; can be light or robust. Grapes from this family used in Chianti, Brunello, etc.

SAUVIGNON BLANC/FUME BLANC
(Also White Loire & White Bordeaux)
Generally leaner than Chardonnay. Can be grassy/herbaceous to varying degreees. Loire and new Zealand generally most assertive. Excellent for "difficult" dishes.

ZINFANDEL
Virtually all of it is from California. Rich, berry-like flavors. Can be light and fruity or big and bold.
